Don’t Let the Cost of Living Crisis Leading to Unsafe Care Choices

The cost-of-living crisis has pushed many families to make tough decisions, including how to afford care for their elderly loved ones. In their search for more affordable options, some have unknowingly turned to unregulated or illegal care services. While these choices may seem like a way to save money, they come with devastating risks.

Unfortunately, we’re hearing about this more and more, and you’ve probably seen it in the press yourself. However, cutting corners can be dangerous, and even lead to shocking results.

Families desperate for a care solution can end up arranging unregulated caregivers, only to find that their vulnerable parents were financially or physically abused. Without proper oversight or accountability, the very people meant to provide care can instead cause harm, leaving families with heartbreak and regret. Choosing care for a loved one is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and it is not an easy one – especially if you are struggling to afford the services they need.

With more than 20 locations around the UK, starting with our first branch in Reading in 2014, we’ve worked hard to build a reputation as a trusted provider of home care services. A big part of that has been understanding the challenges families face when searching for care, and many of our franchisees have first hand experience of this themselves. In fact, it is often a big factor behind why they were inspired to join us!

If you’re arranging care for a loved one, it’s crucial to ensure their safety and well-being by making informed decisions. Over the years, we’ve built a reputation for delivering high-quality, relationship-based care that prioritises the dignity and safety of our clients, so here is some advice based on our own experience:

Confirm the Agency is CQC Registered
This is so important. If you’ve never heard of it, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is a little bit like OFSTED for care companies, but maybe even more strict. It is a legal requirement for all care agencies to be registered with this government body, and adhere to very strict safety and quality standards. There are also regular inspections, and reports on agencies are publicly listed, so it is possible for you to check an agency’s performance before you even contact them.

Knowing an agency has its CQC registration provides you with reassurance that your loved one will be cared for safely and professionally.

Verify Vetting and Training for Care Workers
Registered agencies are required to thoroughly vet caregivers before they start providing services. This includes background checks and references, as well as the usual skills checks and interviews that come with other jobs. They also provide comprehensive training in key areas such as moving and handling, medication management, nutrition, dementia care, and safeguarding. This training is refreshed annually to ensure caregivers are up-to-date with the latest best practices, giving families peace of mind.

It is worth asking your prospective care agency how well trained their staff are, how often their training is refreshed, and what checks they do on staff.

Expect Supervision and Feedback Mechanisms
A quality care agency does more than introduce a caregiver—it supervises and supports them to maintain high standards. Agencies conduct regular reviews with families, seeking feedback to ensure the service meets your expectations. They also monitor compliance with policies and procedures, ensuring your loved one receives consistent and compassionate care.

Ensure Continuity of Care
Life is unpredictable, and if a caregiver is unable to work due to illness or holiday, a registered agency will arrange a replacement to ensure uninterrupted care. This continuity is vital for maintaining trust, routine, and the well-being of your loved one, particularly for those who thrive on consistency.

The Emotional Cost of Choosing Unregulated Care

The financial savings of unregulated care come at a heavy emotional cost when things go wrong. Families who thought they were helping their loved ones often find themselves dealing with the guilt of putting them at risk. Stories of financial exploitation or neglect are sadly becoming too common, and the pain of knowing this could have been prevented is a burden no family should carry.

Choosing a registered, regulated care provider ensures your loved one is cared for with dignity, safety, and compassion. While the costs may be higher, the peace of mind is priceless.
