Michael’s Story: Finding Joy and Purpose in Caring for Others

When Michael became a care professional his passion was to put a smile on people’s faces. I’m a caring and loving person and I have empathy,’ he says. ‘I always have a smile on my face when I go to see my clients.

‘Some like singing. I sing with them and they’re happy. I dance for them, and I’m very happy when I see them smile.’

In Nigeria, Michael cared for his grandmother. When she passed away, he felt he could help other people.

He came to the UK in 2023 and joined Sylvian Care as a care professional.

‘I enjoy being able to care for people, ‘he says. ‘It’s person centred care. The companionship is very important to clients. They are happy to see me, and I’m always happy to see them because I will be adding value to their day. I look forward to seeing them.

‘They feel safe around you because of the kind of care you give them, the quality of care you give them, and the assurance you give them that everything is going to be ok.’

When Michael goes on holiday he misses his clients. He brought back a mug for one of them when he went to Nigeria. ‘He was cheering and very happy and emotional,’ says Michael. ‘And I felt happy and emotional myself.

‘This job gives me joy. I can see the difference I make through what I do and I’m very grateful I’m able to do that.’

He talks to one of his clients about football. Michael loves football and plays in his church football team. They talk about matches, and Michael says it feels like talking to a friend.

‘There’s a good team at Sylvian Care and I’ve been supported very well,’ he says.

‘Becoming a care professional was a very good decision. I have no regrets. My job is very rewarding. I thank God I’m able to share my life with lovely people around me.’
